Lecture 4 Flashcards
(48 cards)
What are the divisions of the brain?
1) Cerebrum
2) Cerebellum
3) Brainstem
4) Diencephalon
What does the Brainstem consist of?
- Medulla
- Pons
- Midbrain
What does the Diencephalon consist of?
- Thalamus
- Hypothalamus
- Epithalamus
Where is the Diencephalon?
Superior to the midbrain
What is the Cerebrum the site of?
- Memory
- Intelligence
- Personality
- Behaviour
What is the fissure called that divides the 2 hemispheres of the Cerebrum?
Longitudinal Fissure
What are the 2 hemispheres of the Cerebrum joined by?
Corpus Callosum
Where is the Cerebrum?
In the ACF and MCF and extends posteriorly
What are the grooves called in the Cerebrum?
Sulci
- Central
- Lateral
- Parieto-occipital
What are the folds called in the Cerebrum?
Gyrus/Gyri
What are the 4 lobes in the Cerebrum?
1) Frontal
2) Parietal
3) Occipital
4) Temporal
What are the functions of the Frontal lobe in the Cerebrum?
- Motor commands
- Speech production
- Personality
What is the function of the Parietal lobe in the Cerebrum?
- General sensation
(all p’s- Pressure, Pain, Proprioception, Position)
What is the function of the Occipital lobe in the Cerebrum?
Visual sensation and cortex
What is the function of the Temporal lobe in the Cerebrum?
- Hearing & Comprehension of speech
- Spatial orientation & memory
What are the major functions of the Cerebrum?
- Thinking- consciousness and learning
- Integration of all sensory input
- Integration of motor control
Where is the Cerebellum?
In the PCF
What is the function of the Cerebellum?
Unconscious control/coordinates of movement: eg balance, speech, posture
What are the parallel folds in the Cerebellum called?
Folia
What is the function of the Brainstem?
Communication between cerebrum, cerebellum and spinal cord
Where is the Brainstem?
Between diencephalon and spinal cord
What originates from the Brainstem?
Cranial nerves
What is the Corpus Callosum?
A bundle of nerve fibres or axons
What is the function of the Corpus Callosum?
Permits communication between the 2 cerebral hemispheres
