Ala nasi
What is the Nasal Septum formed by?
- Vomer
- Perpendicular plate of Ethmoid
- Septal Cartilage
What is the roof of the Septum formed by anteriorly?
By the nasal bones & frontal bone
What is the roof of the Septum formed by intermediate?
Cribriform plate of the ethmoid
What is the roof of the Septum formed by posteriorly?
Body of the sphenoid
What does the Perpendicular plate form?
The posterior part of the lateral nasal wall
What foramen is associated with the Nasal Septum and where does it open?
- Sphenopalatine foramen
- Opens into the pterygopalatine fossa
What is the rounded swelling below the middle concha termed?
Ethmoidal bulla
What is the curved gap below the ethmoidal bulla termed?
Hiatus semilunaris
What is the area above the
superior concha termed?
Sphenoethmoidal recess
List the 2 types of mucous
membrane that line the nasal cavity
1) Olfactory
2) Respiratory
List the 4 quadrants
1) Postero-superior quadrant
2) Postero-inferior quadrant
3) Antero-superior quadrant
4) Antero-inferior quadrant
What is the Postero-superior quadrant innervated by?
Nasal nerves- Branches of pterygopalatine ganglion (maxillary nerve V2)
What is the blood supply to the Postero-superior quadrant?
Sphenopalatine artery- Terminal branch of maxillary artery
What is the Postero-inferior quadrant supplied by?
Branches of greater palatine nerve & artery
What is the venous drainage?
- Posterior part into pterygoid plexus
- Anterior to facial vein
What is the lymph drainage?
- Posterior part to retropharyngeal nodes
- Anterior part to submandibular nodes
What is the function of Paranasal Sinuses?
Communicate with the nasal cavity
Where do the Frontal sinuses open into?
The middle meatus of the nose
What is the nerve and blood supply of the Frontal Sinuses?
Supraorbital nerve & artery
Where does the Maxillary sinus open into?
The middle meatus of the nose
- Opening is at a higher level than the floor
What is the mucous membrane lining of the Maxillary Sinus innervated by?
Infraorbital & superior alveolar nerves
Where does the Ethmoidal air cells open into?
- Anterior & middle groups opens into the middle meatus
- Posterior group into the superior meatus
