Lecture 21 Flashcards
(28 cards)
What is the gap between the 2 Pterygoid plates called?
Pterygomaxillary fissure
What foramen is in the Medial wall and what is it formed by?
Sphenopalatine foramen
- Formed by perpendicular plate of palatine bone
What foramen is in the Posterior wall and what is it formed by?
Foramen rotundum
- Formed by the two pterygoid plates
Where does the sphenopalatine foramen lead to?
Into the nasal cavity
Where does the Foramen rotundum lead to?
Into the MCF
What does the Pterygopalatine fossa contain?
- Maxillary nerve
- Pterygopalatine ganglion
- Terminal part of the maxillary artery
Where does the Maxillary nerve enter through?
Foramen rotundum
How does the Maxillary nerve enter the orbit?
Through the inferior orbital fissure, where it known as the infraorbital nerve
What are the Maxillary nerve branches attached to?
Pterygopalatine ganglion by 2 ganglionic branches
What do the Posterior Superior Alveolar nerves supply?
- The upper molar teeth
- The buccal gingiva
- The lining of maxillary sinus
What is given off anteriorly?
The posterior superior alveolar nerves
What does the Maxillary nerve give off and where?
Just before it enters the infraorbital fissure, it gives off the zygomatic nerve
What is the function of the Pterygopalatine ganglion?
A relay station for parasympathetic secretomotor fibres derived from facial nerve
How does it reach the ganglion?
Via the nerve of the pterygoid canal
What do the post ganglionic fibres supply?
The lacrimal gland & glands of mucous membranes in the region
List the nerves of the Pterygopalatine Fossa
- Greater Palatine nerve
- Lesser Palatine nerve
- Nasopalatine nerve
- Nasal nerves
- Pharyngeal nerve
Describe the route of the Greater Palatine nerve
Descends through the palatine canal & emerges through the greater palatine foramen
What does the Greater Palatine nerve supply?
The Hard Palate
Describe the route of the Lesser Palatine nerve
Descends through the palatine canal & emerges through the lesser palatine foramen
What does the Lesser Palatine nerve supply?
Sensory to the soft palate
Describe the route of the Nasopalatine nerve
Runs through the sphenopalatine foramen onto the nasal septum & through the incisive canal
What does the Nasopalatine nerve supply?
Anterior part of the hard palate
What do the Nasal nerves supply and leave through?
- Supplies lateral nasal wall & nasal septum
- Leaves through the sphenopalatine foramen
What does the Pharyngeal nerve supply and leave through?
- Supplies the mucous membrane of the nasopharynx
- Leaves through the posterior aspect of the ganglion
