Q

Identify the 6 main points of the particle theory of matter.

A
  1. All matter is made up of particles.
  2. All particles are in constant motion
  3. All partices of one substance are identical.
4: Tempature affects the speed at which partides move
  4. In liquds and solids, the particles are closer together and have strong forces of attraction between them.
  5. In a gas, there are large spaces between the particles

Q

Identify and explain the particle structure with the three states of matter.

A
  1. Solid state
    • Solids hold a definite shape because the particles are packed closely together and vibrate in one place.
    Example: ice
  2. Ligud state
    • Liquids can flaw and take the shape of their container because their particles have partly overcome their attraction for eachother.
    Example: water
  3. Gaseous state
    • Gases can flow and spread out because their particles are far apart and have completly overcome their attraction for eachother.
    Example: Clouds

Q

Explain the concept of ‘Thermal Expansion’ and ‘Contraction’.

A

Thermal expansion is when the temperature of a solid, liquid or gas increases causing the particles to move faster and, further apart causing them to expand

Contraction is when the tempature of a solid liquid or gas decreases so its particles move slowly and closer together causing the substance to contract
