9
Q

What is the purpose of teh Shaft Grounding Device?

A

Prevents damage to generator and turbine bearings by removing shaft to ground voltage so voltage doesn’t go through bearing/oil film
Copper braids ride against shaft between Generator and “C” LP Turbine

Q

What is the Stator Core?

A

Houses the armature windings while minimizing heat production from eddy currents.

Made up of metal punchings stacked in 2 inch segements w/ 1/2 inch spacer block between for cooling gas (hydrogen).

16
Q

What is Hydrogen Cooling used for?

A

Used for cooling in the Generator - forced in generatore by double bladed single stage fans through the generator rotor and stator core

17
Q

What is used to cool the H2 Cooling Gas?

A

Hydrogen Coolers using Service Water through the tubes

18
Q

How is cooling controlled for the H2 cooling system?

A

AO TCV on outlet of Service Water from Cooler - normally set to 40C

19
Q

Why is Hydrogen used to cool the generator?

A

Thermal conductivity of H2 is 7 times that of air.
Density of Hydrogent is 1/14 that of air - less windage loss (air friction)
As H2 pressure increase, density increase, heat removal increase

20
Q

What are disadvantages of using H2 cooling?

A

Can be explosive between 4.1% and 74.2% - ours is kept at 90%

21
Q

How do the H2 Cooler TCV’s fail

A

Fail closed on loss of air to E/P controller
Fail open on loss of air to valve or positioner
TCV controller powered by Inst Bus

22
Q

What is the purpose of the Generator Thermal Gas Analyzer?

A

Measures thermal conductivity of gases which can be converted to H2 Purity

Alternate uses H2 fan DP can be correlated to purity

Vents to Roof when shutdown

23
Q

What is the Hydrogen Dew Point Monitor?

A

Monitors dew point to look for moisture in Generator.

24
Q

What is the Generator Core Monitor? How does it work?

A

Monitors generator atmosphere for evidence of particles that would be given off by insulation breakdown due to overheating

Flow is from fan D/P or H2 press vented to roof when Shutdown
Normal reading is 80%, at 50% a sample needs to be drawn

25
Q

What is the normal H2 pressure online?

A

60#

26
Q

How is generator Purging performed?

A

When online, generator is filled with H2
When taking offline, must be purged with CO2, then CO2 is purged with IA when shutdown and maintenance must be performed.

When putting back in service, IA is purged with CO2, then CO2 is purged with H2.

27
Q

What is the purpose of Bus Duct Cooling and it’s normal flow path?

A

Used to cool the Isolated Phase Bus Ducts by blowing air down the B phase and returns via the A/C Phases.
2 blowers available, normally only 1 in service when field breaker closed

28
Q

What is the power source for Iso Phase Bus Duct Cooling?

A

2A & 2AA : MCC 25-2
2B & 2BB : MCC 26-1
NO AUTO START

29
Q

What cools Bus Duct Cooling?

A

TBCCW

30
Q

What interlocks are associated with Iso bus duct cooling?

A

W/ Field Breaker C/S in NAC and bust duct fan off, will generator an alarm

31
Q

How are generator VARS controlled during a shutdown?

A

VARS are reduced to prevent reverse power trip setpoints from being changed.

32
Q

What are the temperature Limits on the ISO PHASE Bus Ducts?

A

bus temp < 105C; Duct Temp < 80C
