Suffix

-tumor (ex. hepatoma)
Prefix
-attached to the beginning of root word (modifies meaning)
What does a suffix indicate?

- example: bilateral (both sides)
sub-
- under
- example: subcostal (under the ribs)
intra-
- within
- example: intrahepatic (inside liver)
tachy-
- rapid
- example: tachycardia (rapid heart rate)
a-
- without
- example: agenesis (born without)
Sonographer’s Role
1) interpreting the requisition for the exam ordered
2) what does the clinic info. from the referring physician mean?
3) what is the question being asked?
4) writing your technical preliminary findings after exam
5) correct punctuation and spelling is important
* the physician then uses ALL of this info. to create a final report

- used to ease pronunciation

- has no meaning
- used to connect 2 root words
- used to connect a suffix and a root word
- not used to connect a prefix and a word root
- example: hepat/o/megaly (enlarged liver)
