What cover does nitrofurantoin provide?
Gram positive and negative cover

Why is good renal function required for nitrofurantoin?
MOA relies on renal function to secrete it into urine via renal tubules
CI of nitrofurantoin
< 3 months old
At term or breastfeeding
Acute porphyrias
G6PD deficiency
Action if pulmonary symptoms or hepatitis occur?
Discontinue immediately
SEs of nitrofurantoin
Hypersensitivity
Vaginal thrush
GI upset
Nausea and vomiting
Peripheral and optic neuropathy
Hepatitis
Haemolytic anaemia in neonates
May colour urine yellow or brown
Duration of treatment in females
3 days
Duration of treatment in males
7 days
