Why is minocycline not used for meningococcal prophylaxis anymore?
Due to SEs of dizziness and vertigo
Indications for tetracyclines
Lower respiratory tract infections
Acne
Rosacea
Malaria
Chlamydia
CI for tetracyclines
Avoid in children under 12- bind to teeth and bones and can affect them
Pregnancy (can be used for malaria prophylaxis up to 15 weeks gestation)
Breastfeeding
Myasthenia gravis
Alcohol dependence
Counselling points for Doxycyline
Take with water during meal times whilst sitting or standing to avoid oesophageal irritation
Avoid direct sunlight/artificial UV rays, can cause photosensitivity reactions
Spare 2 hours before or after before taking dairy, indigestion remedies, or products containing zinc, iron, or calcium
SEs of Tetracyclines
GI disturbances
Photosensitivity
Tooth enamel discolouration in children
Hypersensitivity reactions
Minocycline can cause irreversible pigmentation

Inhibit bacterial protein sysnthesis by binding to ribosomal 30S subunit
