dental dam
A
- Make sure to read brief and isolate the correct tooth!!
- Single tooth isolation, multiple tooth isolation or split dam technique
- Floss ligatures and wedjets
- Clamps
o Winged – inserted into dam and applied together
o Wingless – clamp placed and dam brought over clamp
o Remember to floss through both holes of clamp when placing to protect airway – avoid bow of clamp as this will be difficult to remove and act as a wick for saliva
o Anteriors – C or E
o Premolars – E or EW
o Molars – A, AW, FW or K - Punch, frame, clamp forceps
- For posterior teeth punch largest single hole 2cm diagonally from the centre of the dam sheet and turn to appropriate quadrant
- For anterior teeth the hole may be punched more peripherally, to ensure the dam doesn’t cover the patient’s nose
o Scissors can be used to trim the sheet if necessary - Oraseal caulking agent or OpalDam – provide appropriate peripheral seal
- Seal can be checked with CHX MW
- Remember to ease dam off wings with flat plastic and floss contacts to ensure a good seal
- Marks given for operating posture (adjust chair, patients height, light), correct clamp selection, correct clamp orientation and frame positioning (covers upper lip but not nose)
