Q
GA consent and tx plan
A
- SDCEP – if a child is pre-cooperative or unable to cooperate (age, learning disability, BMT’s unsuccessful), has multiple affected teeth or the dental infection becomes symptomatic, consider referral to assess suitability for XLA under sedation or GA
- Discuss diagnoses and treatment options, including BRAN
- Inhalation sedation is a safe and effective form of sedation, useful for children aged 5 years or over
- Intravenous sedation may be useful for teenagers
- GA:
o Explain that a general anaesthetic involves being put to sleep for treatment, and this usually occurs in a hospital setting such as theatre with an experienced team of dentists, nurses and anaesthetists
o Explain reason a GA would be appropriate
o You would attend for an assessment visit first of all to make sure your child is suitable and agree on what treatment is to be carried out
o On the day of the treatment, it is very important that your child has an empty tummy. They shouldn’t eat for 6 hours prior and should not drink for at least 1 hour prior. You can bring a toy with you
o Your child will get some numbing cream on the back of their hand and then a small cannula will be placed in their hand to provide the medication to put them to sleep. Your child will then go to sleep for a few hours, and once treatment completed, will be taken to the recovery room. One parent can accompany the child just before and straight after treatment. Your child will be offered something to eat/drink and will remain on recovery until assessed as ready to go home
o Risks
Likely to feel dizzy, sick, agitated or have a headache afterwards
Risks of pain, bleeding, bruising, swelling, infection, sore/stiff jaw as with any dental treatment
Some children can have a serious allergy to anaesthetic – 1 in 10,000
