Q
explain biopsy procedure
A
- Explain to pt that they have been referred for a biopsy as you have a lesion/lump in your mouth that requires further investigation
- A small sample of tissue from the lesion is taken and examined under a microscope by a pathologist, to identify what is causing the lesion and what treatment may be necessary
- There are two types of biopsy:
o Incisional – used to remove only part of a lesion. Used when lesion is very large or we are unsure of the diagnosis
o Excisional – used to completely remove a lesion. Used when lesion is very small or we are fairly certain of diagnosis - On the day of your appointment:
o You can eat/drink as normal and take any medications normally unless told otherwise
o The clinician will introduce themselves to you and get your to sign a consent form containing procedure, risks and benefits, allowing time for Qs
o They will then numb the area with LA, just like your dentist would for a filling
o Once numb, the sample of tissue is taken. Pressure is then applied and some dissolvable stitches placed to stop any bleeding. Overall this should take about 15-20 mins
o The clinician will then give you some post-op instructions:
Pain – area may be uncomfortable for a few days following, take normal painkillers that you would for a sore head
Bleeding – avoid physical activity, avoid rinsing for 24 hours, soft cold food/drink for next few hours, avoid biting on area and avoid smoking/drinking for 24-48 hours. Normal to notice some blood in saliva, however if it does start to ooze, place some gauze on the area with pressure for 10-15 minutes
Infection – don’t rinse for 24 hours, however from then rinse with HSMW. Clean teeth as normal
Stitches – dissolvable stitches placed which should dissolve away by themselves within 2-4 weeks
If any issues or concerns feel free to get in touch
o Arrange a follow-up for results of biopsy
