explain physical abuse/child neglect
- Child abuse – physical, emotional, neglect, sexual
- Neglect – failure to provide a childs basic needs
o Nutrition, warmth, clothing, shelter, hygiene, health care, stimulation, education, affection
o Dental neglect – obvious dental disease, impact on child, failure to attend - Physical abuse – look for signs:
o E/O – bruising, abrasions, lacerations, burns, bites, choke/cord marks, eye injuries, hair pulling, fractures
o I/O – brusing, abrasions, lacerations, burns, tooth trauma
index of suspicion
o Delay in seeking help
o Story vague, lacking detail, varys with each person
o Account not compatible with injury
o History of previous issues
o Abnormal behaviour of child/parent
manageemnt of child neglect
o Observe, record, communicate, refer
o Preventive dental team management
Raise concerns with patients, offer support, set targets, keep records, monitor progress
Seek parents consent to refer only if appropriate
o Preventive multi-agency management
Liaise with other professionals – GMP, social worker, HV, school nurse
Does child have child protection plan?
Agree joint plan of action and review at regular intervals
o Child protection referral
Phone then follow up in writing with facts and statement of concerns
