Respiration Flashcards
(8 cards)
What is respiration?
Respiration is the breakdown of nutrient molecules to release energy from the bonds between them.
What is the equation for aerobic respiration?
Glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water
C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ → 6CO₂ + 6H₂O
What is aerobic respiration?
Aerobic respiration is the breakdown of glucose using oxygen to release energy, carbon dioxide, and water.
What is anaerobic respiration?
Anaerobic respiration is the breakdown of glucose without oxygen, producing less energy than aerobic respiration.
What is the equation for anaerobic respiration in yeast?
Glucose → carbon dioxide + ethanol
C₆H₁₂O₆ → 2CO₂ + 2C₂H₅OH
What is the equation for anaerobic respiration in muscles during vigorous exercise?
Glucose → lactic acid
How does temperature affect the rate of respiration?
As temperature increases, molecules gain more kinetic energy, increasing the rate of respiration. However, if the temperature becomes too high, enzymes may denature, slowing down the rate of respiration.
Why does the rate of respiration decrease after a certain temperature increase?
Enzymes involved in respiration can denature at high temperatures, meaning they can no longer catalyse the reactions properly, slowing the rate of respiration.
