Topic 2: Cells Flashcards
(47 cards)
What are all living things made of?
Cells
How are new cells produced?
By the division of existing cells
What does the cell membrane do?
Controls movement of substances in and out of the cell
What is the cytoplasm?
The site where chemical/metabolic reactions take place
What is the function of the nucleus?
Contains DNA and controls cell activity
What do mitochondria do?
They are the site of aerobic respiration
What is the function of ribosomes?
Protein synthesis
What is the endoplasmic reticulum studded with?
Ribosomes
What does rough endoplasmic reticulum look like under a microscope?
Rough
What organelles are in a typical animal cell?
Cell membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus, mitochondria, ribosomes, rough endoplasmic reticulum
What extra parts are in a plant cell?
Vacuole, cell wall, chloroplasts
What is the function of a vacuole?
Contains cell sap and keeps the cell turgid
What does the cell wall do?
Provides strength and helps maintain shape
What is the function of chloroplasts?
Contain chlorophyll to absorb light for photosynthesis
What is a prokaryotic cell?
A unicellular organism without mitochondria and a true nucleus
What is an example of a prokaryote?
Bacteria
What is the bacterial cell wall made of?
Peptidoglycan
What is found in a bacterial cell?
Cell wall, membrane, cytoplasm, ribosomes, plasmids, circular DNA
What are plasmids?
Small circular rings of DNA with extra genes
What is the structure of bacterial DNA?
Circular chromosome of DNA (not in a nucleus)
What is the basic unit of life?
A cell
What is a tissue?
Group of similar cells working together to perform a shared function
What is an organ?
Group of tissues working together to perform a function
What is an organ system?
Group of organs working together to perform body functions
