Topic 9: Transport in animals Flashcards
(44 cards)
What is the circulatory system?
Blood vessels + heart + valves.
What is single circulation?
Blood passes heart once per cycle (fish).
How many chambers in a fish heart?
Two: 1 atrium, 1 ventricle.
Where does blood get oxygenated in fish?
Gills.
What is double circulation?
Blood passes heart twice per cycle (mammals).
Why is double circulation better?
Higher pressure → faster oxygen delivery.
Which side of the heart carries deoxygenated blood?
Right side.
Right atrium receives blood from?
Vena cava.
Right ventricle pumps blood to?
Lungs (pulmonary artery).
Left atrium receives blood from?
Lungs (pulmonary vein).
Left ventricle pumps blood to?
Body (aorta).
Function of septum?
Separates oxygenated and deoxygenated blood.
Why is the left ventricle wall thicker?
Pumps blood all around body.
What do valves do?
Prevent backflow.
Names of heart valves?
Atrioventricular and semilunar.
What happens when atria contract?
Blood moves to ventricles.
What happens when ventricles contract?
Blood moves to arteries.
How is heart activity monitored?
ECG, pulse rate, stethoscope.
Effect of exercise on heart rate?
Increases for more oxygen to muscles.
Why faster heartbeat during exercise?
More energy for muscle contraction.
What is CHD?
Coronary arteries blocked → less blood to heart.
Effect of CHD?
Heart attack.
Risk factors for CHD?
Fatty diet, smoking, inactivity.
Prevention of CHD?
Healthy diet, no smoking, exercise.
