What type of sedation should be performed mainly in children?

A

Inhalational

SIGN, GDC

A

Anxious but compliant children
understand the procedure
can nasal breathe
want treatment

A

children are suggestible (easlily influcned) and NO enhances this
Children easily day dream and NO can guide this

A

50-90% success rate
best in ortho extractions
worst in emergency pt

What alternative techniques are there to inhaltional sedation in kids?

A

IV propofol

BDZ Oral and transmucosal sedation

What are the problems with using IV sedation with BZD in kids?

A

This can cause paradoxical reactions and they also have a narrow therapeutic index

When would you use IV sedation with either propfol or midazolam?

A

in those under 16 as an alternative technique

Which other drugs can you combine with midazolam in IV sedation?

A

M + fentanyl
M + ketamin
M + alfentanyl and ketamine
to be used above the age of 5

Does work but mainly on ortho and not pain

When should you refer children for sedation to consulatant level?

A

for those that are under the age of 12 and whose sedtion cannot be managed by combining oygen and No or midazolam alone.

A

Good but not to be used without a consultant
