Cabin Security Searches

A

FA’s responsible for security searches inside alcohol kits in preflight
-comprehensive
-TSA required inspection of aircraft areas
-Requires completion of WN-966-Aircraft security Checklist
-Before or after galley has been provisioned
-before boarding pax
-At beginning of calendar day (before A/c makes first flight of day)
-prior to Int’l departure
-At int’l destination before boarding customers bound for US
-After Int’l flight has returned to the US and before it is reassigned to domestic flight
-returning from scheduled maintenance
-after returning to service from a military or private charter

Conducting a security search

A

-search inside alcohol kits
-notify captain if any prohibited, suspicious, or dangerous items, signs of tampering, or unauthorized access are discovered
-complete alcohol kits section of WN-966-Write the employee # in designated area and notify “A” when assigned search is complete
-“A” verifies that “B” has completed assigned security searches if notification has not been received that they are completed.
-“A” verifies that the inflight section of WN-966 is properly completed

Cabin Security Checks

A

A security check procedure performed during aircraft turns throughout the day.
-conducted to ensure no suspicious items were placed on the A/C during the flight
-Look for tamper-evident seals to be broken, damaged or missing
-if found to be before a RON A/C first departure of the day must be reported to Captain immediately and specific location.
-Not documented on WN-966

Federal Flight Deck Officer-FFDO-

A

Commercial or cargo A/c pilot who has volunteered to receive specific TSA training to carry a firearm onboard an a/c
-Considered a federal law enforcement officer (LEO)
-not required to fill out LEO paperwork
-Introduce themselves to flight crew
-required to obtain verbal assurance that they have been identified to FAM’s and all armed LEO’s on board
-Mission status-assigned as Captain or First Officer
-Allowed to carry firearm on his person inside the flight deck
-before leaving the flight deck for any reason or prior to unlocking flight deck door at destination airport, must remove holstered firearm and secure it in a locking canvas bag.
Non-Mission status-FFDO is commenting, deadheading or traveling nonrevenue, but has firearm-
-authorized to transport firearm as carryon baggage only
Must be-in a locked holster or a locked container inside a nondescript bag (NDB)
-must be in his possession at arm’s reach at all times
-should preboard but not required to do so
-Flight deck access normally occurs during or before general boarding, and Captain is present to check credentials
Must get captains permission to to occupy cabin jumpseat
-Carries TSA-issued credentials and a valid airline ID
-in non,mission status required to show FFDO credentials and a/c operator ID to Customer service Agent at gate

Security Threat Levels

A

Level 1-Verbal
Level 2-Physical
Level 3-Life Threatening
Level 4-Attack on Flight Deck

Response to all levels-
-ensure Captain is notified immediately
-notify all crew members of the situation
-be as specific as possible
Ensure at least 1 crew member is available to continually update the Pilots on status of disturbance
-Complete IR within 24 hours of security event

Level 1 Security Threat

A

Disruptive, suspicious, or threatening situation or behavior
Ex: shouting, profanity, refusing to respond to requests, initial refusal to surrender HAZMAT or prohibited item )except bomb or firearm)
Refusal to comply with instructions or warnings.
F/A response-
-Atttempt to de-escalate situation
-Initiate lockdown
-notify the Captain
-Use ABA’s to monitor
If unable to de-escalate, keep Pilots updated
Flight Deck response-
-At gate, contact Station Operations to advise of threat and request GSC be advised.
-request for removal of perp if conflict not resolved
-ensure carryon baggage is removed prior to flight
-during taxi implement lockdown-stop A/C if necessary and return to gate to have perps removed-request LEO if necessary
During flight-implement lockdown
Clarify problem with “A”-notify dispatch and request LEO response upon landing
-if requested by F?A’s make pA to attempt to calm perp and resolve conflict

Lockdown

A

Traffic between the pax cabin and the flight deck is suspended until the disruption is resolved
All crew members must be advised, and the clear zone must be maintained
-in all instances of suspicious or threatening behavior, notify Pilots and initiate lockdown.

Clear Zone

A

The area surrounding the flight deck
-forward galleys
-forward entry area
-lavatory
And should be monitored
-From pushback to arrival at the gate, FA’s should discourage loitering and must be vigilant for suspicious behavior
-to check the clear zone, see that no one is in or approaching the clear zone )including the lav) except working Crew members
-this establishes that clear zone is secure
-if Pilots suspect a violation of the clear zone or of flight deck door communication protocols-
-ring cabin with the ALERT signal 3 low chimes

Flight Deck Door

A

A/C is equipped with fortified flight-deck door
-a viewport with a wide field of vision
-a keypad with system status lights
-a lock-inhibit switch (flight deck side) prevents accidental locking and provides ease of access while parked at gate
-blowout panels which, in event of rapid decompression, open automatically to prevent damage to the airframe
-cabin side, a keypad is available for emergency code to be entered

Flight-deck Door communication Protocols

A

Always attempt to communicate with the Pilots over the interphone before entering code on keypad
-pilots will deny any attempt to enter the flight deck without prior verbal communication and confirmation
In response to-entering a code without advance, interphone comm
-tampering with keypad or door know
-knocking or speaking through the door
Pilots will-deny entry
Ring the cabin’s ALERT signal 3 high low chimes

Access to Flight Deck during Flight

A

Individual requesting access to the flight deck must be in position and not appear under duress.
The person on the flight deck who opens the door is responsible for visual confirmation
-the door must never remain open longer than necessary to enter or exit.
There must be 2 people on the fligh deck at all times
-The clear zone may only be monitored by a crew Member working on the flight.
-jumpseat riders are not permitted to protect the clear zone.

Normal Access to flight deck

A

-communications to the flight deck must include advice that the clear zone is secure
-must be at least 2 people on flight deck at all times
-A F/A must replace an exiting Pilot unless there is flight deck jumpseat rider
-The door must never remain open longer than necessary to enter or exit
After the door is closed, pull firmly on the knob and check red status lifght to verify door has power and is securely closed
-When entering or exiting a secured flight deck, 2 crew members are required on the cabin side, one in the cabin to monitor the cabin and another to verify the clear zone is clear and stand before the viewport
-no notifications to cutstomers
-if there is an attempted breach of the flight deck or suspicious activity, immediately close the door and shout
DOOR-DOOR-DOOR
To alert other crew members and customers that assistance is needed.
