Test of association Flashcards
(19 cards)
What are test of associations?
Statistical tests used to determine if there is a relationship between two or more variables
What are the four common tests of associations?
- Pearson’s correlation
- Spearman’s rank order correlation
- Chi square test
- Bivariate liner regression
When do you use Pearson’s correlation coefficent?
- To measure the linear relationship between two continuous variables
When should Spearmans correlation be used instead of pearsons?
With ordinal data or interval data without equal intervals
What does the Chi-square test for independence determine?
If two nominal variables are associated
What is Bivariate linear regression used for?
To test linear relationships and predict a dependent variable based on an independent variable
What does a P-Value less than 0.05 indicate?
A statistically signifacnt association between variables
What is cross-tabulation?
A table showing joint frequency distributions for two or more categorical variables, used with chi-square tests
What does a negative Pearson’s correlation coefficient indicate?
An inverse relationship between two variables, meaning as one increases the other decreases.
How do you calculate the coefficent of determination?
Square the pearsons correlation coefficent
What does the coefficent of determination represent?
The proportion of variance in the dependent variable explained by the independent variable
When should Spearman’s rank order correlation be used?
When analyzing ordinal data or internal data with unequal intervals
Define Bivariate linear regression
A statistical method to determine the linear relationship between two variables
In regression analysis, what does the R squared value indicate?
How well the regression model fits the data
What does a significant ANOVA F-statistic (P<0.05) mean in regression analysis?
The independent variable significantly explainsvariation in the dependent variable
What statisrical test is used to determine if two nomia variables are associated?
- Chi Square test for independence
How do you interpret a regression coefficient?
It represents the amount of change expected in the dependent variable for each one-unit increase in the dependent variable
In chi-square analysis, what do observed frequencies represent?
- The actual counts measured in your data
In chi-square analysis, what are expected frequencies?
Frequencies expected under the assumption of independence between two variables
