Tests Flashcards

1
Q

Neuroimaging Techniques

A

Function – used to assess structure & function of brain structures.

Types –
* structural, focuses on brain structure (CAT/CT, MRI, & DTI)
* functional, focuses on brain structure & indirect neuronal activity (PET,SPECT, & fMRI)

Q

Diffusion Tensor Imaging
DTI

A

Function – structural neuroimaging technique; used to assess white matter tracts (myelinated axon) & structural integrity by identifying rate + direction of water molecule movement & diffusion abnormalities along the axons.

Uses –
* evaluate TBI & concussions
* study white matter abnormalities with cognitive disorders, MS, ASD, & schizophrenia

Q

Computerized Axial Tomography
CAT/CT

A

Function – structural neuroimaging technique; uses x-rays to obtain images of horizontal slices of the brain.

Uses –
* costs less than MRI
* faster image production
* shorter period of stillness required
* safe for pacemakers & metal in the body

Q

Magnetic Resonance Imaging
MRI

A

Function – structural neuroimaging technique; uses strong magnetic fields & radio waves to obtain cross-sectional 3D detailed images without radiation.

Uses –
* provides structural info about the brain, spinal cord, & internal structures

Q

Functional Magnetic Resonance
Imaging
fMRI

A

Function – functional neuroimaging technique; similar to MRI

Uses –
* provides info on changes in blood flow & oxygenation/volume

Q

Positron-Emission Tomography
PET

A

Function – functional neuroimaging technique; injected radioactive tracer taken up by active brain cells.

Uses –
* assess regional brain flow, oxygen consumption/volume, & glucose metabolism

take your pet to the vet for shots, see how they’re function, check on oxygen, brain flow & glucose metabolism

Q

Single-Photon Emission Tomography
SPET

A

Function – functional neuroimaging technique; similar to PET

Uses –
* easier + less costly than PET
* less detailed images

street vet, less expensive but less quality images as the vet/PET
