topic 6 Flashcards
operant extinction
the procedure of withholding reinforcers that maintain a behaviour
classical (respondent) extinction
the procedure of presenting the conditioned stimulus without the unconditioned stimulus.
spontaneous recovery
the tendency for extinguished behaviour to occur again in situations the same as or similar to those where it had been previously reinforced . can occur after a span of time has elapsed. re-acquisition of a extinguished behaviour occurs quicker than during initial training
preventing spontaneous recovery
repeated sessions of extinction (usually in multiple settings) are required to prevent spontaneous recovery
partial reinforcement effect (PRE)
schedules that reinforce more intermittently take longer to extinguish than schedules that reinforce less intermittently .
functional assessment process
- identify and define target behaviour that needs to be increased and /or decreased
- initiate baseline data and baseline collection
- complete functional assessment
- develop and implement treatment
- evaluate effectiveness of treatment itself and effectiveness of its implementation
functional assessment
a systematic process of gathering data to understand the purpose or function of a specific behavior, helping to identify the factors that maintain it.
evaluating effectiveness of functional assessment
did problem behaviours decrease and desired behaviours increase?
if no: check treatment fidelity (was treatment implemented correctly)
if yes: begin promoting maintenance and generalization . reinforce intermittently. apply strategies to foster generalization.
social positive and negative reinforcement
mediated by actions of others
automatic positive and negative reinforcement
not mediated by others
important considerations of extinction
-is it safe to use -> emotional responses, extinction bursts, behavioural variability.
-can you apply it consistently
-do you have procedures to promote generalization and maintenance
- must be able to identify reinforcer for problem behaviour
-automatic reinforcement presents a challenge
