Unit 1 Topic 1.5 - Sleep Flashcards
(12 cards)
Consciousness
Is the state of being aware of thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and events happening both inside your mind and around you
Ex: Sleep and Wakefulness
Circadian Rhythm
A natural, internal process that follows a roughly 24 hour cycle and regulates the sleep/wake cycle in humans. It’s like you body’s internal clock
Ex: Jet lab or working night shifts are disruptions to your circadian rhythm
EEG Patterns
Different stages of sleep can be identified by specific patterns in brain activity, which can be measured using an EEG. These patterns can help scientists understand how deeply someone is sleeping.
NREM Sleep (Non-Rapid Eye Movement)
Happens in STAGES 1 through 3 and gets shorter as the night goes on. It’s when your body starts to relax. You may experience hypnagogic sensations, which are those weird dream-like moments just as you’re falling asleep.
REM Sleep (Rapid Eye Movement)
Is called PARADOXICAL sleep because your brain shows activity like when you’re awake, but you’re body is totally relaxed.
Dream Theories
Theories about why we dream include the ACTIVATION SYNTHESIS THEORY, which says the brain makes sense of random signals by turning them into stories
CONSOLIDATION THEORY - suggests dreams help process and store memories
Memory Consolidation
One theory about why we sleep is that it helps our brain ORGANIZE AND STORE MEMORIES from the day, making it easier to remember things later
Insomnia
Trouble falling or staying asleep
Narcolepsy
Sudden and uncontrollable episodes of falling asleep during the day
REM Sleep Behavior Disorder
Acting out dreams because the body doesn’t stay still during REM sleep
Sleep Apnea
Breathing stops briefly during sleep, often causing snoring and poor sleep
Somnambulism
Also known as SLEEP WALKING, where a person walks around while still asleep
