Language
A shared system of arbitrary symbols(often expressed as and combined into phonemes, morphemes, and semantics) that are rule-governed (via grammar and syntax) and generative to produce an infinity of ideas
Phonemes
The SMALLEST unit of SOUND in a language
Ex: Dog: /d/ /o/ /g/
Morphemes
The SMALLEST unit of MEANING in a language
Ex: root words, prefix, suffix
Semantics
The meaning derived from words and sentences. How words combine to form meaning
Nonverbal Manual Gestures
Early communication
Ex: pointing
Cooing
The first stage of language development, consisting of vowel-like sounds
Babbling
Repetitive consonant-vowel sounds
Ex: “ba-ba”
One-word Stage
When children begin using single words to represent entire thoughts
Telegraphic speech
Two or three word sentences that resemble telegrams
Ex: “want-cookie”
Over generalization
The application of grammatical rules too broadly leading to errors
Ex: “goed” instead of “went”
