Unit 2 Topic 2.4 - Encoding Memories Flashcards
(6 cards)
Encoding
The conversion of a sensory input into a memory. Encoding is the FIRST stage of memory processing
Mnemonic Device
Techniques used to enforce information that aid retrieval by connecting new info to something similar
Ex: acronyms
Method of Loci
Loci means “location” relies on spatial relationships to encode and retrieve info
Ex: (move foot to break - frontal lobe)
Chunking
Divide large pieces of info into smaller chunks
Hierarchies
Multiple steps, items are paired then pairs are paired
The Spacing Effect
Distributed practice is when you spread out your study sessions over time with breaks in between
Ex: what im doing now
Serial Position Effect
Where an item is located on the list impacts the likelihood of it being remembered
Ex: words that come first and last are most likely to be remembered
