Unit 2 Topic 2.6 - Retrieving Memories Flashcards
(6 cards)
Recall
Remembering without cues. Retrieving information from memory WITHOUT EXTERNAL cues.
Ex: i can recall her name
Recognition
A sense of awareness and familiarity experienced when one encounters people, events, or objects that have been encountered before or when one comes upon material that they have already learned
Context-Dependent Memory
The idea that memory retrieval is more effective when you are in the same ENVIRONMENT/SETTING where the information was originally learned
Ex: If you learned the names while watching Snow White, being in the same setting coukd improve your recall of their seven dwarves’ names
Mood-Congruent Memory
When your mood during retrieval matches the MOOD you were in when encoding information
Ex: If you were happy while learning peoples names you may recall them more easily
State-Dependent Memory
Retrieval is enhanced when you are in the same PHYSICAL or MENTAL STATE as when your first learned the information
Ex: if you were relaxes while learning names, being relaxed again can help you remember them
Retrieval Practices
Testing Effect - the finding that taking a test on previously studied material leads to better retention than does restudying the material for an equivalent amount of time
Metacognition - the awareness and understanding of your own thought processes, including knowing what you do and don’t know
Ex: reflecting on how confident you were on remembering something demonstrates Metacognition
