Sex
Refers to the biological characteristics such as chromosomes, hormones and reproductive organs used to classify someone as make or female at birth. Does not fully determine one’s gender
Gender
A social and psychological concept that relates to how individuals identify themselves and how society expects them to behave based on that identity
Gender Identity
Is a persons internal understanding and experience of their own gender.
Ex: someone assigned as female at birth may identify as something else
Gender Roles
Are the societal expectations for who individuals should behave, think, and feel based on their perceived gender.
Gender Stereotypes
Are oversimplified and often inaccurate beliefs about what characteristics or behaviors are typical or males or females
Gender Socialization
Is the process through which people learn behaviors, attitudes, expectations associated with their gender
Ex: boys might be encouraged to play with trucks while girls are given dolls
