Maintenance Rehearsal
A process of repeatedly verbalizing or thinking about information to keep it in SHORT TERM memory longer
Ex: repeating a number to not forget it
Elaborative Rehearsal
A memory technique that involves thinking about the meaning of the information and connecting it to existing knowledge, which aids LONG TERM retention
Ex: trying to remember someone’s name and you might think of five other things one knows about people with that certain name
Autobiographical Memory
Memory for events and experiences from an individual’s life, often deeply tied to personal meaning and emotions
Ex: remembering the school you went to
RETROgrade Amnesia
A loss of memory for events that occurred before an injury or the onset of a condition. Some may not remember their PAST but can still form NEW memories. Damage to some part of CORTEX.
Anterograde Amnesia
The inability to form new memories following an injury or an event while LONG TERM memories from the past remain intact. Trouble forming NEW memories. Damaged HIPPOCAMPUS
Alzheimer’s Disease
A progressive neurological disorder characterized by memory loss, cognitive decline, and changes in behavior.
Infantile Amnesia
“Childhood Amnesia” the commonly experienced inability to recall events from early childhood
Causes
1. Cognitive abilities necessary for encoding events for long term have not developed
2. Parts of brains responsible for remembering personal events have not yet matured
