Unit 3 Topic 3.7 - Classical Conditioning Flashcards
(9 cards)
Classical Conditioning
A learning process in which an organism learning to associate TWO STIMULI, leading to CHANGE in behavior
EX: Pavlov’s Dog Experiment
He rang a bell (NS) just before giving the dog food (Unconditioned stimulus). After several repetitions, the dogs began to salivate from just hearing the bell, even if no food was given.
Unconditioned Stimulus (UCS)
A STIMULUS that NATURALLY and AUTOMATICALLY triggers a response WITHOUT prior learning
Ex: food (naturally causes salivation)
Unconditioned Response (UCR)
A NATURAL, AUTOMATIC reaction to an UNCONDITIONED STIMULUS
Ex: salivation to the food
Conditioned Stimulus (CS)
A previously NEUTRAL STIMULUS, that after being with the UNCONDITIONED STIMULUS (UCS), elicits a CONDITIONED RESPONSE
Ex: the bell (after conditioning)
Conditioned Response
A LEARNED response to a previously NEUTRAL STIMULUS that has become conditioned
Ex: salivation in response to the bell
Acquisition
The initial stage of learning when an association between CONDITIONED RESPONSE and UNCONDITIONED RESPONSE is first established
Extinction
The process by which a CONDITIONED RESPONSE diminishes and eventually disappears when the CONDITIONED STIMULUS is repeatedly presented WITHOUT the UNCONDITIONED RESPONSE
Spontaneous Recovery
The reappearance of an extinguished CONDITIONED RESPONSE after a period of time WITHOUT. exposure to the CONDITIONED STIMULUS
Stimulus Generalization
