Define federalism
The sharing of powers between federal and state governments
Define republic
A type of government in which the people (voters) choose (elect) representatives to make laws
Explain the system of checks and balances
Checks and Balances is a system designed to separate power among the three branches of government. Under this system each branch of government can check or limit the power of the other two branches
What are the roles of the president?
Chief Diplomat
Commander in Chief
Head of State
Legislature Advisor
What is the presidents cabinet?
A group of advisors that helps the president set government policy
What is an amendment, and how many have been made to our constitution?
An addition or change to a formal document such as the constitution. There have been 27 amendments.
What does the term “unconstitutional” mean?
Not allowed by or against the constitution

What are the 6 steps in a bill becoming a law?
- ) A bill (proposed law) is presented to congress
- ) Congress votes on the bill. It needs a simple majority to pass.
- ) Once a bill is approved by congress, it goes to the president. If he approves it, it becomes a law. If he does not approve it, (veto) it goes back to congress

What does supremacy of national law mean
No state could make laws or take actions that went against the constitution
