Paper’s purpose
Examines the relationship between leadership and its impact on creativity and innovation within organisations. It highlights the significant role leadership plays in fostering an environment conducive to creativity and innovation
Creativity
The generation of novel, useful, and original ideas through cognitive and behavioural processes. It is an intrapersonal and cognitive process that results in the birth of unique ideas. According to George Kneller, it involves a fresh look at familiar landscapes to discover the unknown. This underscores the transformative potential of leadership in fostering organisational climates conducive to innovation
Innovation
The subsequent implementation of creative ideas into practices, procedures, or products that meet new requirements or unarticulated needs within the organisational context. It involves a set of processes including problem identification, adoption or modification of new ideas, promotion, and practical implementation of these ideas to achieve organisational goals
Leadership
A pivotal force in shaping an environment where creativity and innovation can flourish
Transformational leadership
Characterised by idealised influence, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and individualised consideration. It emerged as a significant positive predictor of both creativity and innovation
Motivational mediators
E.g. intrinsic motivation and psychological empowerment are identified as crucial motivational mediators that drive creative and innovative behaviour among employees
Affective mediators
E.g. positive affect, facilitates creative and innovative endeavours within teams and organisations
Social-relational mediators
E.g. trust in the leader, facilitates creative and innovative endeavours within teams and organisations
Workplace creativity
Primarily concerns the generation of novel ideas
Workplace innovation
Focuses on the subsequent implementation of these ideas, including problem identification, idea adoption or modification, promotion, and practical application
