- most often effects ilium but can be anywhere in the GI tract

- Inflammatory ulcerative “skip” lesions that involve the entire thickness of GI wall and create cobblestone appearance
- Genetic component
- Onset is teens to mid-30s

Where is the location of ulcerative colitis?

- Begins in the rectum and progresses proximally through the large intestine

- Inflammation affects only mucosa and submucosa (bleeding)
- Onset is 18-30s
