Chem Flashcards
Polyatomic ions and what are they
Groups of atoms that have overall charges are polyatomic ions. They are:

Intramolecular forces
Atoms within molecules have forces between them called intramolecular forces. Covalent bonds form between atoms with an electronegativity difference of under 0.5, polar covalent bonds form between atoms with an electronegativity difference of 0.5-1.7 and ionic bonds form between atoms with an electronegativity difference of over 1.7. Ionic bonds are the strongest and form electrolytes so they conduct electricity. Ionic compounds are solid at room temperature and disassociate completely in water. They also have high melting and boiling points. Polar covalent compounds disassociates in water bit does not conduct electricity. Covalent bonds are the weakest, so covalent compounds are gases at room temperature.
How does water turn into hydronium
It accepts a hydrogen proton
Formula for nucleus pull on valence electrons
ENC/(d^2)
What three elements fill the valence shells with less than eight electrons
Boron, aluminum and beryllium
How to know how many bonds an atom will form
Its the number of electrons it will gain or lose for an ion
