Statistics 1.1 Flashcards
descriptive statistics
Organizing and summarizing data. Describes data through numerical summaries, tables, and graphs.
Statistic
the science of collecting, organizing, summarizing, and analyzing information to draw conclusions or answer questions. In addition, statistics is about providing a measure of confidence in ay conclusions.
Inferential statistics
Uses methods that take a result from a sample, extend it to the population, and measure the reliability of the result.
Population
The entire group to be studied
Sample
A subset of the population that is being studied
Individual
A person or object that is a member of the population being studied
Parameter
A numerical summary of a population
Statistic
A numerical summary of a sample
Variables
The characteristics of the individuals within the population
Can be classified in two groups: qualitative and quantitative
qualitative (categorical)
Allows for classification of individuals based on some attribute or characteristics
Quantitative
Provides numerical measures of individuals. The values can be added or subtracted and have meaning.
Can be divided into two groups: discrete and continuous
Discrete
Quantitative variable that has either a finite number of possible values or a countable number of possible values. CANNOT take on every possible value between any two values
Ex: 0,1,2,3; NOT 0.3, 1.5, 2.24,....
Continuous
A quantitative variable that has an infinite number of possible values that are not countable. Can take on every possible value between two values
Ex: 1, 1.2, 1.335, 1.5, 2, 2.4,.....
data
The list of observed values for a variable
Ex: gender, color, make & model...
