• 1st the Temne of Sierra Leone, a collectivist soceity that is based on rice farming, harvested by everyone in the community
• requires cooperation and coordination
• 2nd Innuit people of Baffin Island in Canada, an individualistic society ehich survives by hinting and fishing, individual basis
• used Scots as a control group, approx. 120 participants in each group
• ## each individual was brought into a room by him or herself

• these are the practice test to make sure directions were understood
• 4 more trials: on the 3rd trial there heard the following direction “ here is another sheet with nin lines on it, one here on the top and eight benath it
