Procedure

A
  • carried out a longitudinal study 25 months
  • 28 children, 4-12 years old and their relatives in a single Samoan village
  • interviews and naturalistic observations
  • Samoan culture is very hierachial and Samoan communities are rigidly ordered by rankwith village chidefs (authoruty figures)
  • fishing lines, spears and nets are limited, children do not participate in fishing with adults

results

A
  • noted that young males spend a lot of time watching the ault males fish but there are no direct instructuos
  • children around 10 years old would borrow the adults fishing equipment and experiment on thei own without any adult supervision.
  • age 12 most children were able to fish on thei own- parents have a largely non-interventionist approach
  • 50 examples of children watching adults as they fished yet recorded only one example of an adult inviting a childto take a turn
