interactionist approach for schizophrenia Flashcards
(5 cards)
what factors does the interactionist approach consider
biological- genetic vulnerability, neurochemical abnormality, neurological abnormality
psychological-stress,life events, daily hassles
what is the A01 for the diathesis stress model
diathesis stress model combines effects of internal vulnerability and external stress trigger, vulnerability was originally thought to be genetic but now it includes childhood trauma. a stress trigger would be any negative psychological experience, the only way to overcome this is CBT and drug therapy combined
what was mehls explanation for the diathesis stress model
schizophrenia is entirely genetic, you have to be born with a schizogene to have schizophrenia, no amount of stress can give you schizophrenia
what is the treatment for schizophrenia according to the interactionist approach
combines antipsychotic drugs with CBT .
what is the A03 for the interactionist approach
supporting evidence from tiernari et al- investigated the combination of genetic vulnerability and parenting style. children adopted from 19k finnish mothers with schizophrenia between 1960-79 were followed up. adoptive parents were assesed for child rearing style, rates of schizophrenia were assed to those in a control group of adoptees with no genetic risk. a child rearing style of high criticism and low levels of empathy was implicated in the development of schizophrenia but only for those with high genetic risk.
large sample size
low population validity
original DST model is over simplistic-multiple genes cause schizophrenia theres no singular gene
new model is holistic
research support for the treatment-315 patients were randomly allocated to a group with CBT and medication or a control group- with medication only. patients with combined treatment showed lower symptoms than those in the control group
