Flashcards in Chapter 26 - Narcotic, Antagonists, and Antimigraine Agents Deck (10):
1

Morphine (I)

Narcotic Agonist

Relief of moderate to severe acute or chronic pain; preoperative medication; component of combination therapy for severe chronic pain, intraspinal to reduce intractable pain

2

Morphine (A)

Acts as an agonist at specific opioid receptors in the CNS to produce analgesia, euphoria, and sedation

3

Morphine (CI)

CI- diarrhea caused by toxic poisons, biliary surgery or surgical anastomoses, respiratory dysfunction, GI or GU surgery, head injuries, alcoholism, delirium tremens, , cerebral vascular disease, liver or renal dysfunction, and during labor

4

Morphine (AE)

AE- ureteral spasm, respiratory and circulatory depression, apnea, respiratory arrest

5

Naloxone (I-A)

Indi- Complete or partial reversal of narcotic depression; diagnosis of suspected opioid overdose

Action- Pure narcotic antagonist; reverses the effects of the opioids, including respiratory depression, sedation, and hypotension

6

Naloxone (AE-CI)

AE- Acute narcotic abstinence syndrome (n/v, sweating tachycardia, fall in blood pressure)

CI- narcotic addiction, CV disease, prego and lactation

7

Ergotamine (I-A)

Ergot Derivative

I- Prevention or abortion of vascular headaches

A- Constricts cranial blood vessels, decreases pulsation of cranial arteries, and decreases hyperperfusion of the basilar artery vascular bed; mechanism of action is not understood

8

Ergotamine (CI-DD-AE)

AE- tingling of the fingers and toes, muscle pain in the extremities, pulselessnessor weakness in the legs, precordial distress, ergotism.

CI- CAD, HTN, or peripheral vascular disease, impaired liver,, prego and lact, Ergotism, pruritus, malnutrition

DDI- beta blockers

9

Sumatriptan (I - A)

Triptans

I-Treatment of acute migraine; treatment of cluster headaches (subcu route)

A- Binds to serotonin receptors to cause vasoconstrictive effects on cranial blood vessels

10

Sumatriptan (AE-CI-DD)

AE- vertigo, myalgia, BP alterations, tightness or pressure on chest, burning sensation

CI- active CAD, caution w/ elderly patients, and renal and hepatic dysfunction, and prego and lact

DDI- ergot-containing drugs, use only 2 weeks after done using MAIO
