Circulatory System - The Heart Flashcards
Organisation (20 cards)
What are the main components of the circulatory system?
The heart, blood vessels and blood.
What type of circulatory system do humans have?
A double circulatory system.
What is the function of the right ventricle in the circulatory system?
Pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs to take in oxygen.
What does the left ventricle do?
Pumps oxygenated blood around all other organs of the body.
How does blood return to the heart after circulating through the body?
Deoxygenated blood returns to the heart to be pumped out to the lungs again.
What is the role of the heart in the circulatory system?
Keeps the blood flowing around the body.
What tissue mainly makes up the walls of the heart?
Muscle tissue.
What is the purpose of the heart valves?
Prevent blood from flowing backward.
How many chambers does the heart have?
Four chambers: right atrium, right ventricle, left atrium, and left ventricle.
What happens when blood flows into the atria?
The atria contract, pushing the blood into the ventricles.
What occurs when the ventricles contract?
Blood is forced into the pulmonary artery and aorta.
How does blood circulate to the organs?
Through arteries, and returns through veins.
What is the function of coronary arteries?
Supply oxygenated blood to the heart itself.
Where is the pacemaker located in the heart?
In the right atrium wall.
What is the role of the pacemaker cells?
Control the resting heart rate by producing electric impulses.
What is an artificial pacemaker used for?
To control heartbeat if the natural pacemaker cells don’t work properly.
Fill in the blank: The electric impulse produced by pacemaker cells causes surrounding muscle cells to _______.
contract.
True or False: The blood flows from the atria to the ventricles when the ventricles contract.
False.
What happens to the blood after it gives up its oxygen at the body cells?
It returns to the heart to be pumped out to the lungs.
What is the cycle of blood flow in the heart?
Atria fill, contract, blood moves to ventricles, ventricles contract, blood is pumped out.
