What do all aphasias impair?
Both spoken and written language.
Name two types of aphasia.
Broca’s aphasia and Wernicke’s aphasia
What is conduction aphasia?
Inability to repeat words despite intact comprehension and fluent speech
What is speech apraxia?
Difficulty generating articulatory motor plans
What causes pure word deafness?
Damage to superior temporal regions; can’t recognize speech sounds, though hearing is intact
What is alexia?
Inability to recognize written words.
What region is selective for speech sounds?
Superior temporal sulcus (STS).
What does the primary auditory cortex respond to?
All sounds, not speech-specific
What is the function of V4?
Responds to any letter string; not sensitive to meaning
What is the function of the VWFA (Visual Word Form Area)
Sensitive to semantic content and symbolic word representation
What condition results from callosal damage affecting V4/VWFA?
Hemialexia
Why is learning to read English harder than Italian?
English has a complex mapping between letters and sounds; Italian’s is simpler
How does brain activation differ in English vs. Italian readers
English > Italian: Greater reliance on VWFA (orthography).
Italian > English: Greater reliance on secondary auditory regions (phonology).
