E.1 Socialtecnhical concepts Flashcards
(18 cards)
What are information systems (IS)?
Socio-technical systems comprised of technical, informational, and social artefacts embedded in a technical language and a social context
Definition from Pfeuffer et al., 2019
What components comprise an electronic health record (EHR) system?
Technical components, human-machine interfaces, repositories of patient-related information
Includes input, output, storage, processing units, user interfaces, programming languages, and anthropomorphic design
What is the primary purpose of an EHR system?
To deliver patient-related information to authorised users when, where, and how they need it for health service delivery purposes
What are the three dimensions through which information systems can be viewed?
- Technological
- Informational
- Social
Define ‘informational frames’.
Cognitive models concerning the assumptions, expectations, and knowledge individuals use to understand and manage information
What is ‘ontology’ in the context of information science?
A formal, explicit specification of a shared conceptualisation of an information domain
Derived from philosophy, originally described by Aristotle
What is SNOMED CT?
A large ontology that formalises a shared conceptualisation of specific elements of medical and health knowledge
What does information (data) architecture describe?
What data is held by an organisation, in what forms, and where it is held
What do information management frameworks formalise?
Responsibilities for data governance and specify relevant processes
What are technological frames?
Structures or mental models held by individuals regarding technology
Defined by Orlikowski and Gash in 1994
List the three generalised technological frames presented by Orlikowski and Gash.
- The nature of technology
- Technology strategy
- Technology-in-use
Why is consideration of technological frames important?
- Affects perceptions of utility
- Stakeholders focus on technology rather than information validity
- Technologies enable informational and social enhancements
Define the social frame in the context of information systems.
Focuses on the interactions and social situations surrounding technology use, recognizing system design and implementation as socially-shaped processes
What are the five interacting sub-networks in the socio-technical network for the SCR programme?
- Design network
- Implementation network
- Governance network
- Frontline user network
- Evaluation network
What was a significant finding from the study on implementing the summary care record (SCR)?
Differences in norms, values, priorities, and expectations among stakeholders accounted for instability in the socio-technical network
What are the four stages of ‘translation’ in change management?
- Problem construction
- Selling the idea
- Enrolment
- Mobilisation
What are the eight dimensions of the socio-technical model for health informatics?
- Computing infrastructure
- Clinical content
- Human-computer interface
- People
- Workflow and communication
- Internal organisation
- External opportunities and constraints
- Measurement and monitoring
What is enterprise architecture in the context of information systems?
An approach recognizing different frames via which information systems can be viewed, integrating business, information, application, and infrastructure viewpoints
