What is infective endocarditis?
An infection causing inflammation of the heart valves and chambers, usually due to bacteria.
Name 3 key risk factors for endocarditis.
Prosthetic heart valves
Congenital heart disease
Previous endocarditis
Why are IV drug users at risk of endocarditis?
Because injecting drugs introduces bacteria directly into the bloodstream, which can reach the heart.
What are common early symptoms of infective endocarditis?
Fever, chills, headache, joint and muscle pain (flu-like symptoms).
What heart sound abnormality is often present in endocarditis?
Heart murmur
What empirical antibiotics are used in a patient with a native valve and no allergy?
Amoxicillin + Gentamicin
What do you give if the patient is allergic to penicillin?
Vancomycin + Gentamicin
How long is antibiotic therapy typically continued?
4–6 weeks IV.
