What does RSV stand for?
Respiratory Syncytial Virus.
Which age group is most commonly affected by RSV?
Infants and young children.
What are two major respiratory conditions caused by RSV in young children?
Bronchiolitis and pneumonia.
What are the symptoms of mild RSV infection in children?
Cold-like symptoms: runny nose, cough, and low-grade fever.
What are the symptoms of severe RSV infection in infants?
Wheezing, difficulty breathing, poor feeding, and possibly apnoea.
What is the mainstay of treatment for RSV in children?
Supportive care (e.g. fluids, oxygen if needed) - antibiotic treatment not recommended until suspected bacterial co-infection.
What is ribavirin and is it commonly used for RSV?
An inhaled antiviral licensed for severe RSV bronchiolitis, but lacks evidence of clinical benefit.
What is palivizumab?
A monoclonal antibody for preventing serious RSV lower respiratory tract disease in high-risk children.
