What is another name for the illness caused by Parvovirus B19?
Slapped cheek syndrome, erythema infectiosum, or fifth disease.
Who is most commonly affected by Parvovirus B19?
School-aged children.
Is Parvovirus B19 usually serious in healthy people?
No, it is usually mild and self-limiting.
Name three groups at increased risk of complications from Parvovirus B19.
Pregnant women, immunocompromised individuals, and those with haematological disorders.
What is the classic rash associated with Parvovirus B19 in children?
“Slapped cheek” rash, followed by a maculopapular rash on the trunk and limbs.
Are children with a rash due to Parvovirus B19 infectious?
No, they are not infectious after the rash appears and exclusion from school is not required after the rash appears.
What is the recommended management for healthy children with Parvovirus B19?
Simple analgesia (e.g. paracetamol, ibuprofen).
Is the classic “slapped cheek” rash common in adults?
No, it is rare in adults. Adult may experience polyarthropathy (symmetrical joint pain).
Why should adults avoid pregnant women if a rash is present?
Until rubella status is confirmed to avoid risk to pregnancy.
