What virus causes erythema infectiosum (fifth disease)?
Parvovirus B19
What is the classic facial rash seen in erythema infectiosum?
Bright red “slapped cheek” appearance with sparing of the nasal ridge and perioral area
Describe the body rash in erythema infectiosum.
Lacy, reticular, pink or red rash, often on the arms, legs, and trunk, which may be itchy and can recur with triggers like sunlight or exercise
How is erythema infectiosum diagnosed?
Usually clinical diagnosis based on characteristic rash; blood tests only if complications or in special circumstances (e.g., pregnancy, immunodeficiency)
What is the treatment for erythema infectiosum?
Supportive care only-rest, fluids, and symptom relief (e.g., paracetamol or NSAIDs for fever and pain); no specific antiviral treatment
What are the prodromal (early) symptoms of erythema infectiosum?
Mild fever, headache, runny nose, sore throat, fatigue, and sometimes mild muscle or joint pain
When is a person with erythema infectiosum contagious?
Most contagious in the days before the rash appears; once the rash is present, they are usually no longer contagious
