What causes mumps?
Mumps is an acute viral infection caused by the mumps virus, a paramyxovirus spread via respiratory droplets.
What is the classic clinical feature of mumps?
Painful swelling of one or both parotid salivary glands (parotitis)
What are common symptoms of mumps besides parotitis?
A: Fever, headache, malaise, muscle aches, and sometimes orchitis (testicular swelling) or oophoritis (ovarian swelling).
What is the treatment for mumps?
management is supportive with rest, fluids, and pain relief (paracetamol or ibuprofen)
What are serious complications of mumps?
- Viral meningitis
- encephalitis
- orchitis (which can cause infertility) oophoritis
pancreatitis
deafness.
How is mumps prevented?
the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine, typically given in two doses during childhood.
How can mumps complications be prevented from spreading?
Isolation for at least 5 days after symptom onset, good hand hygiene, and covering mouth/nose when coughing or sneezing.
How is mumps diagnosed?
Mainly clinical diagnosis by typical symptoms and parotid swelling; confirmed by saliva PCR or serology (IgM antibodies).
