What is rubella?
Rubella (German measles) is an acute, contagious viral infection caused by the rubella virus.
How is rubella transmitted?
By respiratory droplets from person to person.
What are the classic symptoms of rubella?
- Mild fever
- maculopapular rash (starting on the face and spreading)
- lymphadenopathy (especially postauricular, suboccipital, and cervical nodes), and sometimes arthralgia.
How long is the incubation period for rubella?
14–21 days (typically about 18 days).
How is rubella diagnosed?
- serology (rubella-specific IgM antibodies)
- Oral fluid / PCR
What is the major complication of rubella in pregnancy?
Congenital rubella syndrome (CRS), which can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, or severe birth defects (e.g., deafness, cataracts, heart defects).
What public health action is required for suspected rubella?
Notify local public health authorities immediately due to its implications for pregnant women.
When is a person with rubella most infectious?
From 1 week before to 4 days after the onset of rash.
What is the treatment for rubella?
Supportive care only-rest, fluids, and symptomatic relief; no specific antiviral therapy.
