Fungi (eg Pneumocystis), Legionella, H. Pylori.
"Legionaires wear silver armor"

3

Chocolate Agar with V and X (what are V/X?)

H. INfluenzae (V=NAD+) (X=Hematin)

Eaton agar with Cholesterol

Myco Pneumoniae

9

Pink on MacConkey

Lactose-Fermenting Enterics (producing acid=pink)

10

Legionella

Charcoal Yeast with cyestine and Iron

11

Sabouraud Agar

Fungi "sabs a fun guy!"

12

Obligate Aerobes

Nagging Pests Must Breathe:
Nocardia, Pseudomonas, MycoBacterium

13

Obligate Anaerobes

Anaerobes C-ant B-reathe A-ir (lack catalse and/or superoxide dysmutase = oxidative damage):
Clostridium, Baceteroides, Actinomyces

14

Obligate intracellular (why?)

Can't make own ATP; Ricekettsia and Chlamydia

15

Facultative Intracellular

Some Nasty Bugs May Live FaculatativeLY:
Salmonella, Neisseria, Brucella, Mycobacterium, Listeria, Francisella, Legionella, Yersinia pestis

16

Encapsulated Bacteria

SHiNE SKiS:
Strep Pneumo, H. Influ, Neisseria, E coli, Salmonella, Kleb, group B Strep

17

Catalase Positive Organisms (what disease are they prominent in?)

PLACESS for you cat(alase).
Pseudomonas, Listeria, Aspergillus, Candida, E.coli, S aureus, Serratia
Chronic Granulomatous Disease (lacking NADPH Oxidase)

18

Urease-Positive Bugs

PUNCH KSS:
Proteus, Ureaplasma, Nocardia, Cryptococcus, H. Pylori, Klebseilla, S. Epi, S. Saprophyticus

19

Protein A (mechanism and organism)

binds Fc region of IgG, preventing phagocytosis of S. Aureus.
A-ureus A-voids A-ttack with protein A.

20

IgA protease (mechanism and organisms)

Cleaves IgA. (SHiN): Strep Pneumon, H. Influe, Neisseria.

21

M Protein

Prevents phagocytosis of Group A Strep (eg pyrogens).
M protein=M-olecular M-imicry M-itral Valve (regurg/stenosis)

22

Klebsiella

4 A's:
Aspiration pneumonia, Abscesses in lung/liver (double L in kleb), Alocholics, and diAbetics.

23

Rash on palms and soles

you drive "CARS" using your palms and soles:
"Coxsackie A, Rickettsia (rocky mnt--really east coast), Syphyllis (secondary)

24

Reiters syndrome

Reactive arthritis post GI (shigella, salmonella, yersinia, camplyobacter) or chlamydial infections

"Can't see (conjnctivitis), can't pee (urethritis), can't bend my knee (arthritis)"

25

Lactose Fermenters

SEEK: Pink on MacConkey.
Serratia, Enterobacter, E. Coli, Klebsiella

26

Ear infection? Bacterial causes and difference between the them?

-H. Flu: Otitis MEDIA: acute in kids/adults. Shows bulging of the tympanic membrane.
-Pseudomonas: Malignant otitis EXTERNA (outside of tympanic membrane). Elderly diabetics. Can progress to osteomyletis and cranial nerve deficits.

27

Quellung reaction?

Used to identify capsular bacteria--they will swell upon addition of anti-capsular reagant antibodies ("Quellung causes capsular swelling")
