What is the classification of pseudomonas aeruginosa?

A

Gram negative bacilli

What infections does p aeruginosa cause?

A

It is an opportunistic pathogen

  • pneumonia in cystic fibrosis (v important to remember)
  • ventilator associated pneumonia

Can infect healthy people - hot tub folliculitis

Why does p aeruginosa colonise on medical equipment such as catheters and ventilators?

A

Biofilm formation

How are pseudomonas infections treated?

A

Very difficult to treat as it have extensive antibiotic resistance

Treated using oral ciprofloxacin (resistant to most other oral abx) and IV gentamicin
