Insight learning (Gestalt) Flashcards
What did gestaltist believe
- That we learn skills through experiencing the whole task/skill, rather than isloated parts/subroutines
- Part learning is not effective and that by learning the skill as a whole kinaethesis and flow are maintained, and performer has a greater understanding of the task with which they are faced
What type of theory is insight learning
Cognitive theory
What does it suggest if it is a cognitive theory
The performer has to think about what to do but uses their experiences and prior knowledge to help with the situation
What does this theory say performers do in new situation
They use their insight and adapt to the sporting situation with which they are faced
What may a coach do in insight learning
Pose questions which the performer has to answer
What does insight learning allow performers to do
Be creative and to develop their own coping strategies and tactics, without having to rely on the coach.
Why is insight learning better than being told what to do
Creates independant thinkers
What will improve in the performer as a result of insight learning
Their intrinsic motivation
Why will performers intrinsic motivation improve as a result of insight learning
The perfomer knows they habe successfully worked out what to do on their own
Give an example for insight learning in rugby
In a 2 vs 1 situation, the attacking player who is the ball carrier evaluates the full situation and works out that she can pass, kick, take the tackle or dummy a pass and run for the line. Remembering a previous match where she was successful, she decides once again to dummy. The full back follows the pass towards the second attacker, leaving space for her to run in the try
