Ion concentration Flashcards
(4 cards)
Define common ion
an ion present in both SOLUTES (ex. KCl + CaCl2, chloride is the common ion)
Define dissociation/ ionization equation
Shows how an ionic compound breaks apart (dissociates/ionizes) into its ions when it dissolves in water or another solvent.
ex.AB → A⁺ + B⁻
Find the concentration of each type of ion in a 0.200 mol/L magensium nitrate solution
single solute problem since it contains 1 solute
1.write the dissociation eq
2. multiply original concentration [ ] by the ions coefficiant
Calculate the chloride concentration when a solution of 19.8g of KCl dissolved in 100 mL of water is mixed with a solution of 26.5g of CaCl2 dissolved in 150 mL of water.
1.determine mols of each solute
2. use dissociation eq to solve for mols of cl- in each
3. [cl-] = total mols cl-/total volume (v1 + v2)
