Lecture 1 Flashcards
What is a construction project
examples: Bliss infrastructure, renovation of architecture building.
Def: temporary (we stress on temporary ) attempt to create unique projects.
Projects go through phases: Planning- Design- Bidding-Construction.
These project phases are called project life cycle and they are well defined (certain start and end).
Once the project is handed over it is no more a project instead it is a built facility
true
No two projects are the same, that is why they are unique
they are always differences (locations, workers, time…..)
We do projects because we want to meet demands (profit , public interest, stating in busineess (update a facility like architecture)
true
How do we measure success of a project (Matrix of success)
5 things
delivering on time ( on schedule) (time is money)
Quality of delivered product ( concrete strength for example)
Budget (can be affected by uncontrolable factors like price of steel in OXY)
Safety ( bcz it is a labor intensive industry)
Environment (use of natural maaterial , emissions)
Measuring the quality is tricky
Because you cant know exactly the quality until it become a facility
built facility success measures
Quality is the only refernce that continue after the project is handed over Operational safety ( are there handles down the stairs) Complaints
Quality of the built facility is more important than that of the project also the budget is higher
true
Expenditure S curve of the project shows that most of the expenditure is in the construction phase.
Also time is the longest
true
Construction is less than flexible than design ( u cant redo a thing it will cost a lot)
true
2 big challenges in construction
environment and efficiency
